Abstract
In Malawi, women participation in R&D and Innovation activities remains lower than that of male counterparts. The 2019/2020 R&D survey revealed that only 31% of the total number of researchers in Malawi are female. The Commission is therefore committed to promoting meaningfully integration of gender equality, inclusivity and intersectionality for equal participation of men and women in R&D programmes. The main focus of the project is to transform systems and practices of the Science Granting Council and stakeholder institutions including researchers to embrace GEII and empower female researchers and innovators to competitively participate in the research and innovation space through policy and capacity building initiatives. Project activities include: Training of NCST staff on the integration of GEII in the NCST policies; Training of Researchers in research institutions to incorporate GEII concepts and practices into the research management; Conducting a survey to develop a database of female researchers in Malawi; and Conducting grant proposal writing and writing for publishing training for female researchers and Innovators. It is anticipated that the project will bring the following impacts: increased participation of women researchers in research projects either as Principal or Co-Investigators; increased female grantees; calls deliberately targeting female researchers; More research publications and innovations done by female researchers; and strengthened network of female researchers in Malawi
